I went into the hospital on September 14 with a migraine that lasted over a week. I do have chronic migraines, but this one was also was affecting my eyes.

I went to U Of M, Hospital; when the nurses arrived in my room, they went through a bunch of questions, said that we were going to go through a handful of tests to make sure that I didn’t have preeclampsia. Fast forward two hours all my test came back fine and normal. They had told me that since my migraine still hasn’t gone away that they were going to diagnose me with acute abnormal preeclampsia.

They told me that I can choose to be induced early, because U Of M health takes migraines seriously when pregnant. I then called my mom to talk with her about what I should do and what they are telling me. Even though I was nervous to be induced, because I honestly never truly knew what that meant, I just know that wasn’t naturally how I wanted. The nurses came back in and I decided that I would be OK to be induced. I talked to one nurse and asked what that meant. She told me that I would be put on magnesium for possible preeclampsia , and that meant I would have to be bedbound, and have to be hooked up to the magnesium the whole time during my birth and my natural birth plan in the pool will not happen.

I was really heartbroken when they told me that, because I had my daughter naturally at home and that is what I originally wanted. Fast forwarding to about 1130 at night. I called my spouse and mom letting them know that I was going to be induced and I would let them know when everything started so my spouse could be heading to the hospital and my mom can take our kids.

They started the magnesium drip, and they told me for about the first 30 minutes that I was gonna feel awful, and man were they right. I felt so bad. I ended up taking a nap. When I woke up and MidWife and nurse came into my room. To let me know they were going to stick a pill inside my cervix to soften it up and try to get things moving. I ended up having to go to the bathroom so they are assisted me standing. To my surprise, I was able to stand and walk on my own. That made me very happy because I knew then I wasn’t going to be bedbound like they said. Fast forwarding to about 9:25 in the morning my water broke, and then call my mom and my spouse and my Doula to let them know.

When they had checked me, I was already at 4 cm. So I knew that this is going to be a very fast, labor and delivery. My last birth was four hours from start to finish, so I can only imagine how the sun was gonna be. My contractions weren’t painful at all. I was able to breathe through them talk. I knew this time around. I want to try my very best to breathe through everything. Be relaxed. Fast forwarding to an hour or so, they started getting a little bit closer together, but not painful.

I let my Doula know so she can head up. I was able to sit on the side of my bed with my feet down and change positions to feel more comfortable. I still wasn’t able to be in the pool just because of being on magnesium. It was about 12:30 and I asked my nurse to get me a birthing ball so I can sit down and bounce. I denied any other interventions. I wanted my body to speak to me naturally, and my baby to come when he was ready. I knew things were progressing just because of how my body was feeling. My support team finally got there; my doula was amazing and helping me breathe through everything keeping me calm. They started getting very intense but now that I’m thinking about it, they truly didn’t hurt as bad as It did my first and second birth. I learned how to breathe and relax and let my body do what needs to do. As I am pushing through a contraction on the birthing ball, I looked down at my arm where my magnesium IV is and my arm is swollen; my IV infiltrated my vein. My nurse quickly took out my IV. She said that we do have to replace it because I have to still be on magnesium. By this time it’s close to 1:00pm and the contractions were intense, and I felt I needed to push. I transitioned back to the bed on my side. As I am going to contractions, my nurse is trying to get the IV in my arm when my contraction stop. But at each contraction I pushed a little bit more. My Doula, knew then it was time, and that he was going to be coming out at any moment. I told my nurse I feel him coming, I ended up getting ready to push, and my midwife had come in lifted the blankets up over my knees and by then his head was already coming out; she didn’t have time to put on gloves or anything and my spouse wasn’t ready to catch him. By my fourth push, his body was out and my midwife caught him with bare hands. It was such a fast and relaxing birth, and I am very happy that my kids were there to witness another sibling being born. My middle child and my spouse cut the cord together once I knew that my baby had all of his blood back from the placenta. I was so happy that he was finally here and that I was surrounded by an amazing support team and that I found an amazing Doula to be there with us .
